Working Mums

I really don't know what to think about this ad. Not so much it's message, but it's method.

I discovered this when I first signed up for the insurance on my car but never really seriously considered it. However, only recently thought that it might actually be fun. Not to mention a 10% reduction on my premium every year until I turn 25.
First few hours of the day consisted of some theory and the mentioning of numerous and well-exercised statistics by one of the six instructors that were there on the day. Forgetting his name, he originated from England while also having mild gay mannerisms. But further made it entertaining. There were many questions and lists made from the symptoms of fatigue and why people speed and so on.
Then once the theory was completed, we took our cars out on the field which gave us a chance to find out how our cars handled in various different scenarios including sudden breaking. emergency lane change and more.
I was placed in a group of two other girls who were sisters which meant that when it came to changing cars, we only had to do it once since they both came in the same car.
In all the scenarios, we were instructed to start driving down a lane marked out with traffic cones not anticipating the instructor's instruction. In the sudden lane change scenario, he would tells us to either go left or right. And we had no idea until it was too late. In nearly all the case I had turned the wrong way and apparently might just killed a bus stop full of kids. This dramatic interpretation of a result was the case in all of them. The cone was either the back of a truck, a dog or some children in a school zone.
It was definitely an experience as I certainly found what it took to bring my car to a stop with the help of ABS breaks as well as seeing the same result in a car without ABS.
At the end we had a debriefing explaining the results and putting what we had experienced and learnt in to context making it more than just skidding and squashing cones.
At the beginning of the session a survey was taken and it was found that 90% of the class came just for the 10% discount, but by the end of it, that was almost forgotten and everyone was in some way impacted.
I will serious encourage anyone considering doing the course to do it as not only do you learn what you car can and can't do, but also find what you wont be insured by (bald tyres etc.) and just how to be safer on the roads.

I find it good for finding out news in tech as it happens, and to continue with people like Leo Laporte outside of his podcasting as well as all the people he has on their as they are the in of tech news.
Main problem I have is the amount of people that "follow" you. Although at first I thought it was all fake, spam twitter users some are legit although just now posting very often at all. Good thing here is that you don't have to follow them back. Because trust me, they're not saying anything worth while.

My surprise at airport security
I haven't been on a flight before, either international or domestic, so everything was very new to me. After checking in at the Rex gate and got my ticket, I proceeded to the security gates. Got a tray out for my phone and junk, got my laptop on another tray and set through both my bags. Stepped through the metal detector and no problems found. Collected my shit and started to leave.
As I was about to walk away from the gates, a security lady pulled me up. I had been chosen for a explosive and dangerous goods check. I thought "No problem". Clearly no threat standing here. So first my laptop bag got analysed for substances. A big tick of approval there. But here came the surprise for me. She then asked to look at my other bag. I quite happily opened it unsuspected of the surprise lying inside. Undid the zipper, and there lied Marra's Teddy Bear. Henry she named him, all dressed up in his suit and all. Very embaressed, I continued on and I must say the lady was very concluded on whether or not I was a threat. Zipped up my bag and left.

Earn $10k a month but can't afford a sign
The problem I have with these signs and wonder why anyone would ever fall for these jokes, is that while these people claim to get you $10,000 a month or per annual, but they can't actually afford to pay for a sign to advertise professionally.
I wish this shit was illegal.

Nightmare time at Motel in Orange

This occurred to me while on my way to Cobar over the Easter long weekend.
Because I wanted to get to cobar early and enjoy more of a weekend I decided earlier that week that I would leave the thursday night and stay at Orange, allowing a three hour headstart on the trip. So I booked a room for Marra, Tom and myself (one room) and explained when booking that I would be arriving late and leaving early. The person on the phone said that it wouldn't be a problem.
But when I arrived their it was a different story. I arrived at the Country Comfort in Orange are 10pm. I entered reception while Tom stood outside having a cigarette. I strolled up to the counter as I normally do when I stay at these places and I stay at all of motels for work.
As usual they ask for ID and credit cards which I happily gave, and they took both to a behind room and made what sounded like 5 copies. Strange i thought but then didn't think much of it.
They asked if I was paying by credit and I said yes, but explained that there wasn't enough on my VISA card (as it's a debit card not a credit card) currently and would prefer to pay in the morning. The man and lady behind the counter got immediately hostile. This point they were saying that I had to find a way to pay or go somewhere else. No other place I have stayed have asked for me to pay up front, as they all do the totals at the end (e.g. pay for the mini-bar). I attempted to transfer the money but my phone was conviently dead and Tom didn't have the ANZ banking phone number. So I again explained that I can't transfer the money now, but asked if I was able to pay by morning. They didn't like this at all. So Tom luckily handed over $100 and I handed over $20 as the total cost of the room was $118. We were then charged another $100 as a cash deposit, as we apparently were going to steal from the mini-bar. This guy was no shitting us both with his rediculous charges, but since we paid, we took the room key and left promptly.
In out room we did use the mini-bar. Couple of beers and some chocolate, but I proceeded to fill out the form ready to pay in the morning. I had gotten out my laptop and transfered plenty of money to pay in the morning. Tom did the right thing and smoked outside as all rooms are non-smoking and have smoke alarms built in. We discovered that the Sofa could also fold out into a bed which gave the option if someone was uncomfortable that they could move to another alternative.
We decided to leave the joint at 6am. The reception was closed and wasn't open for another hour. If we had paid for theroom by credit card the night before, I would have been able to just leave the key, mini-bar tab in an envelope and leave. But we need the deposit back. So we called the reception after hours phone. We woke up the man and he told us to come back later, but I said we needed to leave, plus I was told that it woudn't be a problem to leave early. We were told he would be out in a minute.
Ten minutes rolled on and we eventually see him enter from behind reception and russell with some papers and then disappear again. Next thing we see him walking over to our room. Tom and I both thought "He is going to inspect our room. What a fuckwit". Ten minutes later he returns to his reception desk and eventually opens the door... but doesn't let us in.
First he accuses us of smoking in the room, but when smokers smoke the smell lingers on their clothes and in Tom's case he brought the smell inside. We denied it and explained that he was outside all night. Then asked about the sofa bed and why it was out. The answer we gave wasn't satisfactory and chagred us $11 for using it. And then accused us for stealing from the mini-bar.
"And you weren't going to pay for the mini-bar were ya?"
"Yeah I was. Here is the slip" I handed him the complete form explaining that I was readyto pay. Tom handed out some change which covered the charges.
The guy (never did find out his name) handed back our deposit minus $23 for the mini bar and sofa bed.
"This is fucken rediculous." I exclaimed.
"We're fucken out of here". Tom.
Then the "nice" man proceed to lock the door while saying "Fuck off and never come back" while flipping us off. "We won't thats for fucken sure." I replied and drove away.
I don't know if it was the way we dressed or looked. Whether we looked like dodgy teens with no money ready to rip him off, we were treated like criminals and untrusted from the start.
Do NOT stay at the Country Comfort in Orange!

Return of the iPhone
Sorry about the long delay in blog posts. I have just been extreamly lazy lately.
Well after my story about dropping my iPhone on Keenan's tiles, I have finally gotten a new phone from Optus thanks to a little thing call insurance.
Yes, after paying the $100 excess, they agreed to send me out a brand new phone and be done with it. Very happy. So now the old Sony Ericsson goes back into the cupboard until next time.

Dropped my iPhone
I was at a collegues from work and we were going for a run to get some exercise. Just before we were about to leave to start, I accidently dropped my iPhone on to his tiled kitchen floor. The screen cracked on impack.
However to my surprise I found that it all still worked perfectly. I made a couple of phone calls and sent some texts.
Luckily, I took out the insurance on my phone and I will be able to get it replaced.
